LUSTRE- The ‘glow’ of a pearl, which varies from mirror-like to softly reflective.

SURFACE- The smoother the surface, the more rare the pearl.

SHAPE- The most coveted shape is round, but other shapes have character and sell at a discount.

SIZE- From a tiny seed pearl to the largest South Sea, there is a pearl of the perfect size for you.

COLOR- Some pearls are naturally colored, some are bleached or dyed. Ever seen a natural orange pearl?

MATCHING- Grasp a strand as though it was an arrow in a bow, and look from pearl to pearl: This move alone will let a jeweler know that you know your pearls. Rolling them on a safe surface (never on glass!) will also help your eye determine match and roundness.
